NEW! INSTRUMENT FEATURE

Christopher Rowe

As a company we have for a great many years recognised the importance of contemporary violin making and have championed many makers as a result.

We first met Christopher Rowe in 1987 soon after he graduated from college, when he left an instrument with us to sell for him. This violin sold extremely well and quickly, to a very happy player and from this moment on we have sold the vast majority of instruments produced at his workbench.

The secret to the success of his violins, has been his quality of workmanship, attention to detail and the continuing quest for perfection.

His first violins were made in a reproduction style which were very successful not only because they were extremely well made they had a quality of sound which belied their very reasonable price. His style of making changed around the beginning of the 1990's where he concentrated more on a clean new looking varnish which was around the time when he entered some international violin making competitions. He was initially recognised in Mittenwald with a bronze medal for a viola and violin and this culminated in a gold medal at the Cremona Triennale competition in 1997.

Chris's making has continued since with a wonderful collection of instruments which have gone to many varied players internationally, from gifted students, keen amateur players and professional players alike. Chris is very keen to keep his instruments affordable, and has therefore continued to offer them at a considerably lower price than many less experienced and successful makers.

Violin by Christopher Rowe from 2006

Pictured here is a violin from 2006, number 320. This violin, like all of Chris's violins, has a fantastic consistency of sound, speaks easily and projects well. The violin has an excellent even response with depth on the lower strings and a clean, sweet tone in the higher registers. It therefore lends itself well to a wide range of playing styles making it a versatile instrument when playing a varied repertoire.

Please feel free to contact us for any further information or if you would like to try this, or any of our other instruments.

We are extremely pleased to be able to reintroduce our world reknowned batons, for sale on our website again

After the sad and untimely death of the baton maker, whose company had been producing them for 30 odd years, it has taken some time for the baton making to be re-established. Fortunately the business has been purchased by another local business who have vowed to continue the baton production to the same high standard.
