Instruments and Bows

Catering for every budget and ability, our instruments encompass student outfits for beginners of all ages (see Educational Instruments) to fine old instruments and bows suitable for the professional player. We are always happy to offer guidance and advice, and all customers have the opportunity to try a selection of instruments and/or bows in one of our two private first floor practice rooms. A no obligation two-week approval period can be arranged for an instrument or bow of particular interest.

Although our stock is changing constantly, prices range from under £100 to over £30,000 for violins and violas, £500 to over £50,000 for cellos. We are pleased to represent several contemporary makers, notably Christopher and Elspeth Rowe, and makers from the William Harris Lee workshop of Chicago. We also endeavour to have a good selection of fine older instruments from the best European violin-making schools. Examples of recent sales include instruments by J B Collin-Mezin, Jerome Thibouville Lamy, George Craske, Béla Szepessy, Sebastian Klotz, Giovanni Gaida, Bernard Simon Fendt, Amedeo Simonazzi, Thomas Kennedy, William Forster, Honoré Derazey, Jean Baptiste Vuillaume and Nicolas Vuillaume.

Our collection of bows, priced £25 to £10,000, include contemporary makers such as Marco Raposo, Johannes Finkel, H R Pfretzschner and Paul Sadka, as well as a good selection of fine old bows, many from the workshops of W E Hill & Son or from the finest French makers, for example A Lamy, A Vigneron, F N Voirin and E Sartory.
